Saveni - Botosani
My "shtetl" Saveni
Did you know that Samuel Lerner, the famous american composer of "Popay the Sailor Man" was born and raised until the age of seven, in Saveni ?
Saveni , my native little town, is located in the very north -east part of the Moldavia region of Roumania. The word 'Saveni' has its origin, so they say, in the name Savin, family name of an outstanding land owner who lived in the area in ancient times.
There was nothing special about Saveni of my childhood. God had blessed its surrounding villages with all Nature's goods, leaving Saveni with very little : Negreni got the lake, Stiubieni - the fishponds , Avrameni- the forests, Draguseni -the rich soil, etc...
Saveni had the Naftuli Hill, and a segment of the Baseu river.
There was nothing typical architecturally either. I don't recall any specific monuments or outstanding buildings, except perhaps the twoi,churches dominating the town.
Yet there :was something in the air, in the atmosphere of the place , in the relative geographical isolation from the bigger towns , that gave birth to that very distinctive spirit of the local people, the Savenians. They were witty and kind, hard working , with an open mind.

סווני, מקום הולדתי/ חרוט עמוק בזכרוני
גרנו ברחוב הראשי/ שהיה גם המרכז המסחרי
שתי כנסיות היו בעיירה/ שהקרינו הוד, הדר ועוצמה
וגם בתי כנסת אחדים/ שהתרוקנו אט, אט מיהודים
עיריה, קולנוע, בית חולים/ ספריה אחת לנוער ומבוגרים
נהר ה "באשהו" שהיה מתפרע/ומדגים יכולת הטבע לשגע
ימי ראשון היו לחוויה צרופה/ לכל תושבי העיירה והסביבה
כי יריד תוסס, צבעוני וריחני/ משך אליו את כל המה ומי
דברי מזון ובעלי חיים/ הובאו לשוק ע"י רבבות איכרים
בעגלות רתומות לסוסים/ שבגמר היום שבו אל הכפרים
יחסים טובים והוגנים/ היו בין יהודים לבין הכפריים
קשרי תועלת ופרנסה/ אך גם כבוד הדדי והערכה
בביתנו היתה מתפרה צנועה/ בה אמי בטי עבדה לבדה
כפריות הביאו בדים ו"מאדאם בטי" תפרה להן בגדים
אהבתי בימי ראשון טיול רגלי/ לאורכו של הרחוב הראשי
שבקצהו האחד בית העיריה/ ובקצהו השני הנהר והצמחיה
בדרך, חמדתי את המאפים / של קונדיטור שרבאן המקסים
אקלייר, נפוליטאן, ועוגות דמוי- פטריה/ שהוצגו בחלון הראווה
הקשר עם העולם מחוץ לסווני/ התנהל מתחנת הרכבת בהונגורני
היה גם אוטובוס שבועי מיושן/שנסע במסלול סבני-בוטושאן
לעיירה טרם הגיעה הקידמה/טלפון ורדיו היו מעט בנמצא
חשמל, יש לציין, היה מצרך נדיר/ במרבית הבתים שבעיר
סווני, סווני,עיירת הולדתי/לא תמחק לעולם מזכרוני
כי בה התחלתי את החיים/ ובה ספגתי והפנמתי ערכים

O biblioteca, casa culturala, cinema
La unde fiecare cu placere se ducea
Gradinita de copii si scoala generala
Cofetarie, restaurant, gradina de vara
Spital, post de politie, si alte institute
Mai mult sau mai putin cunoscute
Saveni ( parte din judetul Botosani)
Pe care l-am parasit in urma cu ani
Este si va ramane in amintirea mea
Punct de plecare, luminand ca o stea.

De acolo au venit ai mei colegi de scoala
Harnici, cu vointa si motivatie speciala
De acolo au provenit produsele pe piata
Lapte, branza, carne, peste si verdeata
De acolo s-au ivit clientii pentru acei
Ce lucrau la croitorie, cizmarie si piei
The Baseu River
Saveni lies on the left bank of the Baseu river ( affluent of the long Prut river that separates north-east part of Roumania from the Ukraine and Moldova russian republics). It flows through or near the following settlements: Cristinesti, Darabani, Saveni, Havarna, Stiubieni, Hanesti, Mileanca, Tataraseni, Galbeni, Neculce.

Naughty Baseu river overflowing with shiver
In summer turning dry, unpleasant to the eye
River, stream, whatever, for savenians - forever
Only piece of landscape making hearts vibrate
